Coup de richer: Super-wealthy Central clan now tops obscenely rich 7-Eleven chief

The Chirathivat family, who hold the multi-billion baht Central Group, has overthrown Thailand’s agri-business tycoon to become the kingdom’s wealthiest, according to Forbes business magazine.

The family’s net worth of THB413 billion owes to their famous retail businesses such as the Central shopping mall chain, Centara hotels, Tops supermarkets, and Big C megastores, just to name a few.

Meanwhile Dhanin Chearavanont, the CEO of Charoen Pokphand Group, fell from his perch at the top this year to second place with a paltry THB374 billion. Our condolences.

One of Asia’s largest conglomerates, CP is responsible for 7-Eleven, much of Thailand’s frozen food, True Corp., Lotus Supercenter and more.

After four years in the top spot, Dhanin’s fall is blamed by Forbes on a number of expensive pre-coup acquisitions that were “mistimed.”

Third place goes to Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, the chairman of Thai Beverage and Fraser and Neave, which is responsible for the infamous Chang Beer. He reportedly has a net worth of THB368 billion.
