Cops who shot up student’s car pulled from duty, investigated

Three police officers assigned to the Bang Chan district have been taken off active duty while they are investigated for opening fire with their weapons on a university student driving a car.

Deputy Chief Pongsapat Pongcharoen of the national police, who apologized for the incident Monday, said the four officers has been moved to office jobs as their responsibility in the matter is investigated.

Until recently the three officers, police Sub-Lt. Supot Toket, Sr. Sgt. Maj. Rassami Theptha and Sr. Sgt. Maj. Chamnian Khandaeng, worked under Pongsapat’s leadership in the police’s narcotics unit, but he was recently removed from the job.

On Saturday Apisada Sajjapanroj, 21, fled from the three armed men when they demanded she stop her vehicle. They were not wearing uniforms and did not identify themselves as police.

After a spooked Apisada sped away, striking several vehicles, one of the men discharged his weapon at her vehicle, puncturing three tires and damaging her mirror.

The officers said they’d mistaken the student from one of the nation’s elite universities for a drug dealer based on a bad tip from an informant.

A search turned up no drugs.
