This Monday, Thai law enforcement’s Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) announced that it had decided to undertake the Herculean task of monitoring “false information” on the internet and social media.
Rumors last week of a terrorist bomb explosion prompted the police to pursue this course of action. The rumors, which spread via social media, proved to be erroneous, though they caused a good deal of panic before they were eventually put to rest.
Following the incident, Pol Maj Gen Pisit Paoin announced that the TCSD he would form a 20-member team to monitor posts on social media sites and message boards, with the intent of obviating widespread panic.
The Bangkok Post reports that this new role for the TCSD will require a widespread reorganization of the department, as it currently employs on 120 officers.
