Complaints filed against monks’ luxurious lifestyles

The National Office of Buddhism has received multiple complaints regarding the extravagant lifestyles pursued by many monks. These lifestyles contrast explicitly with the restraint and simplicity monks are supposed to embody.

According to the Bangkok Post, National Office of Buddhism Director-General Nopparat Benjawatananun confirmed that his office had received many reports to the effect. A recent YouTube video has shown three Buddhist monks riding a private jet, wearing brand-name earphones and sunglasses, and carrying a Louis Vuitton bag.

There have also been complaints about monks collecting luxury cars. Nopparat said that even if these cars were gifts from the monks’ pupils, it is still not appropriate to store dozens of sport cars on temple grounds.
