Thai rice farmers
Thailand’s Commerce Ministry has assured the public that the packed rice sold at retail in government-supervised stores contains no trace of fumigation chemicals.
Somsak Kiatchailak, from the Internal Trade Department, said in Wednesday’s meeting at the House Standing Committee on Economic Development that they have sold over 50,000 tons, or 11 million packages, of quality of rice. The sales have come from the Commerce Ministry’s two major retail outlets – Took Jai and Blue Flag.
The official also denied rumors that the ministry was selling rice that is not only spoiled, but was also overly fumigated.
At the same time, Chalida Dinudom, Public Warehouse Organisation (PWO) Vice President, added that only newly harvested rice is being sold at the Blue Flag retail stores. However, several House Committee members have voiced suspicions that old rice is being sold at the Took Jai stores, MCOT Online News reported.
