Bangkok’s City Hall announced last week that it would allow Khaosan Road and Chinatown to continue to host the street markets they have always had.

Despite shutting down street markets in Pratunam, Siam Square, Pak Khlong Talad flower market and Silom late last year, City Hall seems to have realized that the street markets, despite impeding the flow of pedestrians on sidewalks, they do add to the city’s atmosphere,

To that end, officials said they would allow the popular street markets in Khaosan and Chinatown to continue to operate, reported Khaosod English.

In Khaosan, where most of the street stalls sell souvenirs and clothes for backpackers, the vendors can operate from 6pm-1am.

In Chinatown, most of the vendors sell food and will be allowed to operate from 6pm until midnight daily.

While some people have been pleased with the city street cleanup and removal of the street vendors, still many others thought the markets added to the city’s character.
