City Council member upbraids City Hall for installing faulty CCTV cameras

Bangkok City Council Member Wirat Minchaiyanan is on the warpath, calling for immediate action in regards to hundreds of CCTV cameras installed throughout Bangkok that he says are either faulty, or simply non-functional.

To make his point, Wirat brought members of the press to a convenience store in a crime-prone area of the Minburi district. He pointed out CCTV cameras near the store and related that even though these cameras appeared to be functioning, they were in fact failing to record any activities throughout the area.

Wirat claims that of the 57 spots allegedly being monitored by CCTV cameras in Minburi, only a scant four were actually recording surveillance footage. He also pointed out that 208 locations in the district were slated for monitoring by CCTV cameras, but that of these 208 locations, only 57 had actually been outfitted with surveillance equipment.

According to the Minburi district offices, installation of cameras is still ongoing. The district office did not proffer comment on the issue of non-functioning cameras.
