Chuwit jailed for 2 years over 2003 Sukhumvit bar demolition

Politician Chuwit Kamolvisit has been jailed for two years for destroying several bars in the heart of Bangkok in 2003.

The massage parlour tycoon-turned-politician was convicted of destroying 60 bars in an area called Sukhumvit Square on Sukhumvit Soi 10 in January 2003.

Chuwit and two accomplices led 130 men to forcibly evict beer bars in the area encompassing 10 rai of land, which he had purchased.

Three years later he turned it into a private park called Chuwit Gardens.

The verdict today had been postponed from last October, when Chuwit changed his plea to guilty, reported Khaosod English.

A total of 131 men were prosecuted over the demolition, with 66 including Chuwit found guilty and the rest acquitted.
