It’s durian season in Thailand, and the king of fruit is especially popular in Chiang Mai, a city currently experiencing a boom among Chinese tourists.
So how many durians are Chiang Mai tourists and locals putting away every day? While we don’t have a proper durian headcount, a video from news website MThai shows that the city is dealing with a growing mountain of durian shells at a landfill in Muang district.
Officials said they have been collecting approximately 500 kilograms of durian husks from Muang Mai, a major fresh market, every day. Combined with the husks collected from street vendors around the city, Chiang Mai now leaves a solid ton of durian husks every day during the season.
Don’t worry though, the husks won’t sit there slowly degrading, officials plan to turn them into fertilizer.
