After causing much controversy, the golden chedi dress created for Mrs. Thailand to wear in the Mrs. Universe competition in China, has been scrapped in favor of a yet-to-be-unveiled design that incorporates origami fish, rice and Thai silk.
The organizers of Mrs. Universe Thailand decided to replace the dress after some viewers were stupa-fied by the chedi dress, calling it offensive to Buddhist beliefs and disrespectful to the golden chedi it was modeled after, which is at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
Mrs. Thailand title holder and pageant contestant, Kanthicha Chimsiri, announced Monday that she didn’t want to wear the dress after the response and would opt for something more traditionally Thai.
The new design is expected to remain gold and be made of Thai silk but will take its inspiration from woven bamboo fish, and perhaps rice, instead of a religious landmark.
The new dress will be unveiled on June 13, according to The Nation.
We hope the new outfit is closer to “wat” everyone was hoping for.
