Commuting via the river has just become a little bit less of a hassle. Bangkokians who use the Chao Phraya Express Boat service can now pay their fares via a QR code.

In a move to help nudge Thailand along the path to “cashless society,” Chao Phraya Express Boat Co. Ltd., which provides service along Bangkok’s main river, announced yesterday that they’ve installed the QR system at their three busiest piers —  Nonthaburi, Phrannok, and Sathorn (that’s the one connected with BTS Saphan Taksin).

Passengers must have a mobile app from any bank in Thailand in order to make QR payments. The company also offers a small THB2 discount — off the normal THB13 and THB18 fares, according to MThai.

The company hopes to see 30 percent of its 35,000 daily passengers begin using the QR payments and aims to install the QR systems at other piers in the future.

Last month, the Don Mueang airport buses A1 and A2 also began accepting online payments.
