Channel 5 shows photo of Meryl Streep while reporting Margaret Thatcher’s death

During a newscast this morning, a Channel 5 news program mistakenly showed a photo of Meryl Streep, dressed as Margaret Thatcher in the movie The Iron Lady, while reporting on the real Thatcher’s death.

“Khao Ha Na Nueng,” a program that airs daily on Channel 5 from 6 to 8am, broadcasted the photo together with Thatcher’s biographical highlights in an adjoining sidebar.

Facebook user Noppadol Prompasit captured a screenshot of the gaff and later shared it to his account. The photo has been re-shared roughly 1,000 times within the past 10 hours. Critics have unleashed some harsh comments, calling the program’s error unacceptable. A Pantip user even opened a thread to publicly blame the news editor for being inattentive and causing confusion among viewers.

Later, the program made a public apology via its Facebook page and vowed to improve its live coverage.

Margaret Thatcher – the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 – died yesterday at the age of 87 after suffering a stroke.
