A man who injured two people inside the CentralWorld shopping mall with a box cutter was charged with assault but not tested for drugs, police said today.
Thanaporn Butrsee, 23, as of this morning had been charged with carrying weapons in public and assault after he used a box cutter to injure two women yesterday on the mall’s second floor, according to Col. Pansa Amarapitak of Pathum Wan police.
Thanaporn allegedly cut a 27-year-old shop staff member in her face while another woman, a 23-year-old shopper, was cut in the neck. They were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Thanaporn reportedly told the police that he has been unemployed and homeless and went into the department store to “find a job.”
Thanaporn added that he did not know the two women he attacked. According to Pansa, the man could not completely tell police why he committed the crime nor could he elaborate in detail how the incident happened. He had a record of past drug-related charges, but a Tuesday drug test came back negative.
A representative of CentralWorld, who refused to be identified by name, told Coconuts that its security scanners might not be able to detect a box cutter. She insisted that the shopping mall would tighten measures to prevent such incidents from reoccurring.
Correction: An earlier version of this story mistakenly said the suspect was not tested for drugs. In fact, he was but tested negative.
