“In order to make a monkey covet a kitten, it is only necessary to make the kitty difficult to attain,” Mark Twain once famously observed.

One Rayong macaque proved the wisdom of those words when he catnapped an adorable kitten and held him captive above the Klaeng district’s Sam Yan Market this weekend, footage of which has been captivating the nation online.

What began as just another monkey-meets-cat, monkey-falls-in-love-with-cat, monkey-steals-cat story escalated into the mini-Kong perched high above a busy market, clutching his feline Fay Wray. Below, concerned humans shouted at him to release the little, mewling kitty who they worried was starving after several days of simian captivity.

Providing blow-by-blow narration to the riveting, three-part video saga is a woman – possibly the filmmaker – who sounds like she might have tied one on early.

“It let it go! Meow! Meow! Meow! Meow! Meow! Meow! Meow! Meow! Meow!” she shouts, gamely, when the monkey briefly relaxes its grip.

Witnesses reported that a rescue worker dispatched last night to rescue the kitten found it no longer in the monkey’s possession. Coconuts Bangkok was unable to establish its whereabouts or condition as of publication time.

Those familiar with its behavior confirmed the monkey in question is indeed a really, really, naughty monkey. He’s a known terror in Rayong, where his unconscionable chaos has struck homes, markets and schools – and a number of cars, which he apparently enjoys sharpening his claws on.
