Buriram temple abbot butchers pregnant woman with machete

A temple abbot was arrested in Buriram province last night after he allegedly crashed his van into a pickup truck carrying a pregnant woman and her husband, then chased her down and hacked her to death.

Aum Deereunrum, the 57-year-old abbot of Wat Ban Nong Bua was arrested at 7pm and his makeshift machete seized as evidence after police discovered the body of Rumpai Bualoi in front of her cousin’s home in the northern subdistrict of Tum Yai.

Rumpai, 33, was eight months pregnant when she died and people in the community said she had been blackmailing Aum after the two had an affair.

Capt. Suriya Leenurat of the local police station confirmed that Rumpai and Aum had been romantically involved and had fought over money just before her death.

The police said Aum was driving his van when he recognized Rumpai in a truck with her husband. They say he intentionally drove the van into their truck before chasing her down and butchering her with the machete.

Aum told police he was angry with Rumpai but denied ever having sex with her and getting her pregnant. He has been charged with murder and is due in court tomorrow.
