Buddhist holiday brings alcohol ban, starting tonight

In case you’re planning to take advantage of the holiday tomorrow and having a rager tonight, note that last call will come a little early.

Due to Visakha Bucha Day, which falls on tomorrow, all shops, bars, and restaurants are forbidden from selling alcohol for 24 hours, starting at midnight tonight. Sales will resume Tuesday at midnight.

The ban is effective nationwide with the exception of duty-free shops at the airport.

Government offices as well as banks will be closed tomorrow, with the exception of of bank branches at shopping centers.

In Thailand, the sale of alcohol is prohibited on five specific religious days: Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, Asarnha Bucha Day, and the beginning and ending days of Buddhist Lent.
