BTS Group looks to expand outside of Bangkok

BTS Group, the company behind Bangkok’s BTS and BRT mass transit systems, is expanding beyond the city that is it’s namesake.

This week BTS Group announced it has formed a partnership with PT Jakarta Monorail for joint development of two monorail lines in the Indonesian capital at a cost of US$800 million. A day later the company said it may bid on the contract to operate two electric trains in Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh city.

Vietnam is planning two mass transit routes with a total length of 23km, most of which will be underground. PT Jakarta will operate two lines of 14.3 kilometers and 14.7 km lines. Both are expected to be operational in 2016, with BTS the operator for the entire concession period of 40 years.

The Bangkok based company is also hoping to expand its skytrain services in Bangkok. BTS expects to bid for the operation of the 12-km Green Line between Bearing and Samut Prakan, which is currently being constructed and expected to finished within the year.

In addition to mass transit, the BTS Group also has property, services and media arms.
