A 50-year-old Briton was killed in the early hours of New Year’s Day in Chonburi after a firecracker exploded in his face.

Police were alerted early morning Wednesday of the incident at a bar near Pattaya’s Walking Street. They found British national Gary McLaren lying on the ground with facial injuries. Cylindrical firecrackers were found near him, according to Capt. Nakornrat Nonsilat of Pattaya Police.

McLaren died at a hospital later the same day.

The man’s girlfriend and friends told police that McLaren attempted to light the fireworks twice but failed to do so.

The British Embassy has informed McLaren’s family of his death.
