A British national was sentenced to eight years in prison by the Kanchanaburi Provincial Court last night for murdering and dismembering a Bangkok sex worker eight years ago in Bangkok’s Nana area.
Looker’s sentence was halved from its original 16 years due to a confession by the 51-year-old man, and the court ordered him to pay THB12 million in compensation to her family. He had originally denied murdering 31-year-old Laxami “Pook” Manachat, whose body was found in pieces along with animal parts in a large suitcase west of Bangkok in a river on Nov. 6, 2014. Looker’s DNA was found under her fingernails.
Days after the gruesome discovery, security footage was found of Looker leaving with Laxami from a go-go bar at the Nana Plaza sex mall. Witnesses testified to seeing him along leaving a hotel that the two had checked into. Laxami was reported missing by her family in Si Saket province a few days after her remains were found.
In February 2015, Interpol issued a notice for the apprehension of Looker, who police said had traveled to Hua Hin for a few days, where he owned property, before fleeing to Malaysia by train.
He later flew to Spain and was arrested in Ibiza in June 2017 by Spanish police.
Shane waged a long fight against extradition to Thailand, which was was eventually approved on the condition that he receive a fair trial and not be subject to capital punishment.
He was taken into custody upon his arrival at Suvarnabhumi International Airport.
