British traveler receives blood transfusion after dozens queue to donate

A British backpacker has undergone surgery with a vital blood transfusion after an appeal was launched to find blood donors.

Lucy Hill, 21, broke her pelvis in a moped accident on Saturday afternoon in Chiang Mai and needed urgent A- type blood, rare in Thailand.

Doctors say fewer than 1 percent of Thais have negative blood types.

Her family and friends launched an appeal urging people with the blood type to head to Rajavej Chiang Mai Hospital where she is being treated.

She has since undergone surgery and is “out of immediate danger,” the BBC reported. Her aunt Sue Raleigh said she was in “critical but stable” condition.

Lucy’s family and friends have thanked people for their support after dozens queued to donate blood.

Her aunt Sue told the BBC: “The power of social media is just amazing. The people who have given up their time to help is incredible, we’re very grateful.”

Her friend Darren Burns wrote on his Facebook page: “Luce’s is still in intensive care but has received the urgent blood transfusion she needed.

“Thank u to social media, the people that shared the status and the people who donated their blood because really that’s what made it happen!!”

I have received endless amounts of thank u’s through facebook and via text when really stuff like this doesn’t need a…

The appeal was shared on social media 40,000 times within six hours.

Lucy has had three blood transfusions and been fitted with titanium plates in her pelvis.

Her dad Phil told the Manchester Evening News she would probably need more surgery to work on her eye socket.
