An Anglo social club canceled plans to feature “exotic pets” at an annual event after complaints that it was promoting animal exploitation.
The British Club Bangkok last night said it had removed animal-oriented events involving “exotic pets” and a “birds show” from its Living in Bangkok event to be held this coming weekend.
“We have listened to all and feedback and have [taken] the decision to replace the animal activities at the trade show with Kids games and digital entertainment,” it said on social media.
In its original announcement promoting the 23rd annual Living in Bangkok gathering, the club listed “exotic pets” and as a “hightlight” of the event, as well as “birds show.” It included photographs of a snake and a baby lion, presumably as examples of said exotic pets alongside a list of “venders” which included a vegan restaurant.
In addition to lacking a sense of irony, it is worth noting that mastery of English is also not a prerequisite for British Club communiques.
The details didn’t go over well online, and in the ensuing uproar, The Vegan Table BKK withdrew from the event in protest.
In lieu of animal exploitation, the club announced yesterday that the “Nelson Hayes Library” would be a replacement vendor. We will assume they meant the century-old cultural institution that is the Neilson Hays Library.
The event runs from noon to 6pm on Saturday at the club located in Soi Silom 8, a few minutes on foot from BTS Chong Nonsi. Tickets are THB100.
