British backpacker Lucy Hill ‘learning to walk again’ after Chiang Mai accident

A British backpacker whose urgent need for a blood transfusion saw dozens of people rush to donate has taken her first steps with crutches after life-saving surgery.

Lucy Hill, 21, broke her pelvis and suffered a brain hemorrhage in a moped accident earlier this month in Chiang Mai. She needed a vital transfusion of A- type blood, which is rare in Thailand.

Dozens queued at Rajavej Chiang Mai hospital to donate blood after an appeal by her family and friends, which was shared on social media 40,000 times within six hours.

She is now learning to walk with crutches and should be well enough to go home to Bury, Manchester in a fortnight, the BBC reported.

Lucy’s aunt Sue Raleigh said Lucy had titanium plates put in her pelvis, and would need a lot of physical therapy to be able to walk again.

Her dad Phil Hill said the extra blood donated by volunteers would be saved at the hospital for other patients needing the same rare blood, the Manchester Evening News reported.
