An English fisherman caught what’s being called the biggest carp in the world, tipping the scales at a massive 100 kilograms (222 pounds). He caught the oversized swimmer at a pond in Ban Pong, Ratchaburi.
Fisherman Tim Webb, 57, was so proud to have caught the giant Siamese Carp after a 90-minute battle with it, that he bought the fish from the fishery where he was fishing.
Webb is no stranger to Thailand, he owns a fishery called Palm Tree Lagoon in Ratchaburi and spends lots of time here. After catching the carp, he filled the back of his pickup truck with water and drove the giant carp back to his own man-made fishing pond, about 40 kilometers away, where it will swim around and try not to get caught by other anglers.
His catch broke the previous world record for a Siamese Carp by a lot. The last “world’s largest carp” was a petite 32 kilograms (70 pounds) lighter.
Webb got assistance from two fellow fisherman to hold up the enormous fish for a photo.
Siamese carp are the biggest kind of carp in the world and found in rivers across Asia.
Webb told The Sun, “It’s an amazing feeling to reel in a fish that is well over the world record. As soon as I felt it on the end of my line I knew I had something special. I had to fight it hard for a long time because in effect I was reeling in a small car.”
Though he wouldn’t say how much he paid, it is thought to have cost him as much as THB200,000.
The reason for paying that much for a fish is that, “Having a fish of that size generates a lot of interest, people will want to come and have a go at trying to catch it.”
Even though the carp is world-record holding, Webb won’t submit his catch to the International Game Fish Association since they don’t accept records from fishing in stocked waters.
