Booze dividends flow into Thai coffers

If you’re a government official, you don’t need beer goggles to see the beauty in higher taxes.

Two years’ worth of tax increases on alcohol have brought a windfall of revenues to Thailand’s government.

Tax revenues for October were up 21.4 percent or THB35.6 billion for the month of October over last year, and much of that can be attributed to excise tax on liquor and beer, according to figures released today by the Finance Ministry.

Tax receipts totaled over THB178 billion, which beat earlier estimates by nearly 7 perecent.

Alcohol taxes were reworked in September, causing noticeable hikes in the costs of beer and liquor for the second time in recent years,

Bangkok’s revenue target for the 2014 fiscal year, which began last month, is a cool THB2.275 trillion, Bangkok Post reported.
