When two bombs bearing the hallmarks of Southern insurgents were discovered on Ratchadapisek Road yesterday, it was the first time such devices have been found in the capital, Bangkok’s top bomb squad official said yesterday.
The timing and triggering mechanisms of the devices, which were disarmed without incident yesterday, are similar to those which have been made in the south for several years, police Col. Kamtorn Ouicharoen said.
The first of the two powerful devices was found near the Office of the Attorney General inside the Court of Justice compound. The second was found near the Judicial Training Center about one kilometer away.
Housed inside of empty fire extinguisher casings, both bombs were working correctly and would have caused serious destruction, Kamtorn said.
Bomb disposal personnel fired a high-pressure water gun to disable the electronic timing device. That apparently worked, as the bombs failed to explode.
Authorities are examining security camera feeds for clues, Thai PBS reported.
