Boat leaves newbie divers in deep water

For their second anniversary, Lexa and Jake Mendenhall will probably choose something less adventurous, like dinner at Olive Garden.

Anything would be improvement over their first, when they recently certified divers emerged from an hour under water to find themselves abandoned at sea.

The sun was already setting when the U.S. couple from Arizona surfaced along with several others to find the boat which had led them out was nowhere in sight.

“I kept thinking, ‘What if there’s no boat?  It’s evening.  What boat goes out in the evening?” Lexa Mendenhall told KHOU.com.

Jake Mendenhall filmed parts of their dive using a GoPro camera.

A dive instructor also abandoned with them used an inflatable tube to get the attention of a passing boat before the sun set entirely, which picked them up after about 30 to 45 minutes in the open water.

“When we were bobbing, I knew there were sharks.  I saw them all around this reef, and here I am just bait on the top,” Lexa Mendenhall said.

Their boat captain reportedly left the dive scene after experiencing engine trouble.
