BMTA says ‘stop’ to sexual harassment on buses

Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) recently launched a campaign to educate drivers, conductors and passengers on appropriate behavior on public transportation.

The campaign comes after an internal survey conducted one year ago found that sexual harassment was running rampant on public buses. To put a stop to it authorities are using a multimedia approach involving stickers, pamphlets and videos.

All of the BMTA’s 14,000 employees have attended education classes, which revealed that most did not know what constitutes as harassment. Sexual taunts and objectification of female conductors by colleagues and passengers is highly commonplace.

The BMTA said it will take time for things to change, but it hopes that harassment levels will reduce dramatically, the Nation reported.
