The crude oil washing up at Koh Samet’s Phrao Bay is seeping into the sand and forming layers of black muck below the surface of the beach, according to a report today.
The oil spill cleanup operation is now in its fourth day, after the July 27 leak on a pipeline owned by PPT Global Chemical Plc (PTTGC) sent 50 tons of crude oil into the Gulf of Thailand.
Despite good progress being made on the oil removal process, Thairath wrote that the operation was still far from complete and crude oil was found to be seeping into the sand at many areas of the beach.
In a response to the discovery, PTTGC has ordered to remove the oil-contaminated sand for treatment. The petroleum conglomerate has vowed to conduct full-on recovery plans for the beach after the cleanup.
