The death of a black American at police hands which has cascaded into protests around the world will reach Bangkok this weekend.
A rally to show support to the Black Lives Matter movement called “Justice for George Floyd (Peacefully Paying Our Respects)” will be held 1pm to 3pm on Sunday at a location yet to be announced.
The organizers of the event, which was announced Tuesday, encouraged attendees to wear black, wear masks, bring signs and practice social distancing. So far, more than 800 people have expressed interest in the event.
Reached for comment Thursday afternoon, organizers said the event was more likely to take place virtually.
Thailand, which has its own history of state brutality, is currently under an emergency decree in response to the coronavirus pandemic that was used late last month as a pretext to quash an anti-government rally.
