Bell-kicking tourist sought for public shaming

Chiang Mai authorities are looking for a tourist to to publicly shame after he single-footedly enraged a nation by kicking a temple bell at the famous temple atop Doi Suthep.

Video which surfaced online Saturday of the man, who, yes, is believed to be a visitor from mainland China, delivering a deliberate kick to the bell has upset many for whom disrespect toward Buddhism is considered a grave affront.

Police are currently searching for eyewitnesses, checking CCTV footage, as well as asking Chinese guides and travel agents for clues as to the man’s identity, Bangkok Post reports.

Police said once they find the man, they plan to present him to the public as well as educate him on Thailand’s culture and etiquette. If he doesn’t take it graciously, they will deport and blacklist him from the country, according to police Maj. Gen. Bundit Tungkhaseranee of Chiang Mai’s Immigration Division 5.
