Beer and bonding lure jumper down from Bangkok building

A little camaraderie and some beer helped convince a man from leaping to his death today.

Cops and rescue volunteers this morning talked to a man identified only as Vi down from a three-story building in Soi Pridi Banomyong 47, near where Soi Sukhumvit 71 turns into Ramkhamhaeng Road.

To talk him down, one Khlong Tan cop had a roughly 30-minute chat to calm him down.

In footage of their exchange, the cop tells him in the same Isaan dialect that he “didn’t have to fear anyone, we are all from the same hometown” Ruam Katanyu Foundation volunteers tempted him come down and talk over his problems with “some beer and water.”

He later told the police he’d come to the capital to install billboards and had a fight with his wife back home.

A foundation volunteer who declined to give his name said this afternoon that the man wasn’t hospitalized or had a history of mental illness. He said no one was hurt and no property damaged during the incident.
