It was billed as the “Battle of the Beards,” but despite having marginally less facial hair than fellow expat Dana Blouin, it was Jon Nutt who proved to possess considerably more punching power.
The event took place Saturday night at “Full Metal Dojo 5” at Live House in Chatuchak Park and was headlined by the fight between these two American heavyweights.
Nutt is the FMD promoter and although he spent much of the evening as master of ceremonies or singing, he still found enough energy to emerge triumphant at the end of the night.
Blouin set out his take the fight to the ground but was frustrated in his early takedown attempts. The Thammasat University PhD student who was making a comeback after eight years away from competitive MMA, found himself forced to stand and trade with an opponent well versed in the art of Muay Thai.
First Nutt swept Blouin to the ground with a perfectly timed kick, and moments later he landed another low kick followed by a hard left hook which dropped the 36 year old. He was clearly stunned and experienced referee Olivier Costs stepped in straightaway to stop the action.
Blouin is a referee for FMD himself and had spent much of the evening supervising fights and wrapping hands backstage. However while there was clearly no animosity between these two friends and colleagues there was no questioning the ferocity of the punch which finished the fight.
In the other main event, top Thai prospect Pongsiri Mitsatit put on an entertaining show for the crowd as he assaulted Nattapong Limpwattanachai with an early barrage of punches and soccer kicks to score a first round stoppage which took his record to 4-0.
Thai pride was also at stake in the final of the featherweight tournament as Jirwat Iamsamang met seasoned Filipino boxer Rufino Mante. Both men had triumphed in semi-finals earlier that evening, but it was the local fighter who would win the competition after claiming a unanimous decision win.
