Bangkok’s saltier tap water still safe to drink, officials say

Bangkok’s tap water is getting saltier but the metropolitan waterworks says it’s still safe to drink.

When the downstream flow falls in the Chao Phraya River, an incursion of seawater can make the tap water brinier than usual, and since Saturday complaints of salty water led officials to say salinity has increased by half a gram per liter.

That’s still within the World Health Organization’s standards, according to a report in state media.

The funkier flavor is most noticeable in the Phra Khanong, Lat Phrao, Min Buri, Bang Khen districts and eastern Bangkok in Samut Prakan province.

People can check reports on their water quality online.

Meanwhile the public has been asked to report any cracks or erosion along the banks of rivers and waterways.

Drought has caused subsidence of roadways and even cost one woman her home west of Bangkok in Samut Songkhram province.
