The 13th Annual Bangkok International Rugby 10s is going down this Saturday and Sunday at Bangna’s Bangkok Patana School. The weekend-long tournament promises play by over over 1,600 athletes from around the world including 40 mens teams, eight womens teams, and 38 childrens teams from places as far-flung as London, Zimbabwe, and Australia.

“The Tens,” as it’s known in the rugby community, attracts a host of sports celebrities and fans from around Asia. Rugby players and fans are often as much about the parties as the games. So, the weekend kicks off with an opening party on Friday at 6pm at the Ambar in the Four Points Sheraton on Sukhumvit Soi 15.
Each night after the play is finished, after parties with live DJs and bands will play on the fields at the school.
In addition to the rugby, there will be live music, food stalls, drinks, and a beer garden, as well as a kids’ area with games and activities, including a bouncy castle, thus making the event totally family friendly.
One of the highlights of the event is the old timers match. “The Battle of the Ancients,” as it’s called, is for players over 50 years old, though some are as old at 80. As the video says, “They aren’t allowed to throw their teeth at the referee and they’ve all got a slip of paper in their pockets reminding them of who they are and where they are.”
The Tens is organized by volunteers and the event raises funds for the Nak Suu Tigers Rugby Academy, a charity for at-risk kids in Bangkok’s slum communities aimed at helping them improve their lives through sports and education.
However, as one player succinctly put it, “We like chicks, we like rugby, that’s why we come to the 10s.”
