Bangkok’s luxury car problem may have its roots in Malaysia

The Nation is reporting that Bangkok’s influx of illegal luxury cars (which recently gained a surprising amount of public attention) may have its origins in Malaysia – at least in part.

According to Customs officials from Songklah’s Sadao district, approximately 200 luxury cars have been seized during the past few years as smugglers tried to move them across the Malaysian border into Thailand via waypoints at Sadao and Padang Besa.

Many of the cars passing through these waypoints are either stolen, or were reported “stolen” for the purpose of claiming insurance money, says Prayuth Maneechote, chief of Custom Office Region 4.

Prayuth reports that in the past year, his office has captured 35 luxury cars as smugglers attempted to move them across the border.
