Tuition at international schools in Bangkok is lower than most other major Asian cities, according to a new report.

The median annual tuition at the capital’s international schools is US$14,336 (THB430,000), just over US$2,000 dollars less than that of all Asian cities assessed in a study published yesterday by the International Schools Database.

The Prague-based group found the least expensive Bangkok school cost US$2,516 (THB76,000) while the most expensive was US$31,125 (THB940,600).

Bangkok ranked 12th in cost compared to 19 cities studied in Asia. Globally, it came in at 18th out of 56 locations. As international schools in Thailand are considered quite elite, they are usually more expensive than regular private Thai schools.

Phuket made the list at 17th in Asia and 40th in the world.

Beijing and Shanghai had the most expensive schools, not only in Asia but the world. In Asia they were followed by Shenzhen, China; Seoul and Singapore. Globally, Zurich, Switzerland; Shenzhen, China; and Lausanne, Switzerland followed on the list.

The list did not assess educational quality or anything beyond cost.

The database factored the whole cost of tuition for a full term for a 6-year-old student – excluding incidental costs such as enrollment and application fees. Only cities with seven or more international schools with publicly available tuition data were included in the research. The costs used in the study were all collected on the same date, according to its authors.
