As Bangkok’s sky turned deep red like never before last night at 6pm, Bangkokians flocked to the windows of their offices and houses to take photos of the phenomenon and share them online.
Some Bangkokians were freaking out — while others were excited — as the sky turned an unusual color after it had rained all afternoon.
While Westerners may think a red sky is pretty, it is a bad sign in Thai culture. Thai fishermen consider it a sign of a dangerous storm and they would not set sail if the sky were red.
Here is a time-lapse video of last night’s sky by Adam Birkan, an American, Bangkok-based photographer that has been named one of Magnum’s 30 Under 30 photographers, was the winner of Photo District News’ Emerging Photographer award.
Here are some snapshots from Coconuts Bangkok’s office and social media.
