Bangkok taxis win global reputation

Even though Bangkok taxis may hold a certain reputation among locals, world travelers disagree.

Whether in blue, pink or that striking yellow-green paint job, Bangkok taxis in fact rank eighth in the world, according to this year’s survey by Hotels.com.

Any questions?

Travelers voted according to seven categories: safety, value, knowledge of area, availability, quality of driving, cleanliness and friendliness. In addition winning a place in the top 10, Bangkok taxis were voted the best-valued in terms of money alongside New York, according to the annual global poll, which received nearly 3,000 responses from 30 countries.

Hotels.com also surveyed the drivers to find out who are the best tippers in the world. Bangkok taxi drivers ranked Americans as the most generous (53 percent), followed by French (16 percent), Spanish (13 percent), German (10 percent), and Irish (6 percent), Manager and Hotels reported.

However, Bangkok residents themselves may not think of their taxis so positively. There have been exactly 39,655 complaints regarding Bangkok taxi service in the past two years. The most common problems mentioned are rejecting passengers (50 percent), evicting passengers before reaching destination (14 percent) and rudeness (11 percent), according to the statistics of October 2011 through April 2013 from Department of Land Transport.

Last year Bangkok ranked No. 5 in the survey, but still received high marks for value, which respondents ranked as their second-most important criterion.
