The Thai government has lowered the cost of solar-cell installation to encourage Thais to invest in the renewable energy. Energy Minister Pongsak Ruktapongpisal said solar-cell installation has been cut from THB300,000-400,000 to under THB200,000 per panel.
Pongsak said the cost of purchasing a panel will be low enough that individuals can easily takeout a loan and begin repayment by selling power back to the government.
The government will begin buying from the solar power grid next month.
The government also has a pilot project in the works to generate 800 megawatts from community solar cells. Each community would carry a 1-megawatt solar cell system in order to earn income for their community. Requirements are appropriate power lines and sufficient sunlight, the Nation reported.
