Bangkok to participate in World Car Free Day

Bangkok will be taking part in World Car Free Day, scheduled for September 22, City Hall officials announced Tuesday.

City hall spokeswoman Tridao Apaiwong said that besides using bicycles as the primary mode of transportation, the city will also designate the Rattanakosin old city area as a “car-free zone.” On that day, motorists and public vehicles will not be allowed to pass into the said area.

Additionally, the Thai Cycling for Health Association will be riding from Sanam Luang to Central World mall at Ratchaprasong intersection. This campaign is aimed at promoting “pedal power” as a healthier and more sustainable means of travel.

The Bangkok Post reports that World Car Free day celebration is a global campaign that aims to drum up awareness about the pollution caused by cars and other fuel-burning vehicles.
