Bangkok has highest number of Facebook users among world’s cities

Bangkok is the top town for Facebook, as the capital has the largest number of active Facebook users in the world, according to the latest data released by We Are Social.

Bangkok is currently home to 30 million Facebook users, which accounts for 1.5 percent of its total 1.968 billion active users worldwide. Bangkok surpasses another Coconuts city — Jakarta, which has 22 million users.

While the big mango may win the city category, Indonesia by far is the most Facebook-active country in Southeast Asia with its 111 million users. The Philippines came second with 63 million users, followed by Vietnam (50 million users) and Thailand (47 million users).

Globally, with nearly 2 billion users, Facebook remains the most popular social media site in the world. YouTube follows Facebook with a paltry one billion, while Instagram sits a bit further down the chart with 600 million users. Twitter also scores a respectable 319 million users.

Although Facebook may be the most popular social network, its Messenger feature lost out to Whatsapp, which boasts 1.2 billion users. WeChat continues to rise to world domination as the most active social platform in China with 889 million users.

Another interesting fact presented is that only half of the world’s population uses the internet, and that most people access websites on mobile. Surfing the net on laptops and desktops dropped nearly 20 percent over the past year.
