Officials have decided to offer free English reading and writing classes to Bangkok taxi drivers in hopes of helping them better serve foreign tourists.

And the drivers at Suvarnabhumi Airport will be given the first chances to join the classes, reported Thai PBS.

A program by the Thailand Professional Qualification Institute, Skill Development Department, and Airports of Thailand, the classes will cover basics like introductions, greetings, basic words about destinations, and directions.

The director-general of the Skill Development Department, Suthi Sukoson, said “They represent the first line of defence to welcome the tourists and, therefore, it is necessary that they must cause impression for the tourists.”

The drivers will have a full day of instruction with a test the following day. Those who pass get a certificate good for three years. They expect about 1,000 drivers to pass the test this year.
