Bangkok Bank yesterday fired a female employee who allegedly stole a combined THB1.77 million (about US$53,000) from three customers in Uttaradit province and pledged to reimburse victims for their losses.

Pol. Col. Ditsayadej Patcharapuwadon, chief of Uttaradit Muang Police, said the bank has agreed to return the stolen money to all three customers no later than this Friday, according to Channel 3 News.

The story first hit public consciousness last Friday when the first victim, coconut merchant Prasongchai Makbumroong, filed a police report saying that THB700,000 (about US$21,000) had gone missing from his account.

A day later, another customer contacted police after discovering THB577,000 (US$17,600) missing from their account. The final victim, a 90-year-old man, filed a report this Monday saying THB500,000 (about US$15,000) had disappeared from his account at the same Uttaradit bank.

Though the employee had not been named, a bank representative told police that she has a ruinous online gambling habit, according to Amarin TV.

The perpetrator confessed to the crime after being confronted by authorities, claiming she could not make enough money to pay her debt back in time.

In addition to being fired, Bangkok Bank has filed a lawsuit against the employee seeking THB1.8 million (US$54,000) in damages.
