This weekend, a farang backpacking couple visiting Chiang Mai were hailed as heroes for their brave mission to save three Thais drowning in a Chiang Mai canal.

The couple saw the Thai people sinking in their car, which had recently driven off the road and into one of the city’s canals, and dived into the dirty water to free the people in the car, reported The Nation.

The heroics happened at the canal on Manee Nopparat Road after Thanaporn Pinchai, 45, the female driver of a white Toyota Vios hit the accelerator instead of the brake, sending her car into the water. She had her husband, Saeree Pinchai, 49, and unnamed son in the car with her.

The identities of the foreign couple are unknown though a bystander snapped their picture and shared their story online. The post, by Facebook user Tungmayy May, has been shared 11,000 times since the Saturday night event.
