Villagers in Chantaburi province, in the east of Thailand, labored tirelessly in the middle of the night to save a sweet and helpless baby elephant that fell into a well on a farm early Friday morning.

The elephant was partially submerged in mud and water and struggling to stay afloat and get air, he was obviously getting more and more upset and his cried can be heard throughout the video.

Perhaps the reason he had been unguarded long enough to fall in a well was because his mom had been shocked by an electric fence in the area and was in shock, presumably as the accident happened.

Nearby residents heard the cries of both animals and quickly brought in a backhoe to dig up the well and expose the baby around 2am on Friday.

Three hours later, as dawn was breaking, they had created a gentle enough slope that the small elephant could walk out on its own, to much excited cheering from everyone watching and helping.

Weirdly, the baby seems to bark at and attack the scooping section of the backhoe, as if it were his enemy instead of the tool that saved him.

After happily reuniting with his mommy, they walked off into the forest.

These elephants are just two of many wild elephants living in this corner of the province, rarely visited by foreigners but a destination for domestic tourists who love the scenery, waterfalls, and durian grown in the area.

Because the wild elephants often raid properties and farms for food, many locals have installed electric fences to protect their property.
