State-owned Thai Airways was named world’s 10th-best airline today by Skytrax, a UK agency that reviews airlines and airports.
At the London-based World Airline Awards, dubbed — by Skytrax, we’re guessing — the “Oscars of the aviation industry,” Thai Airways not only placed 10th among airlines, they finished first in the “best airline lounges spa facility” and “best economy class” categories.
For the first time since 2008, Singapore Airlines scooped up world’s best airline honors — its fourth first-place finish since the awards began — followed by Qatar Airways and Japan’s ANA (All Nippon Airways).
The awards news is likely welcome news in the hallways of Thai Airways, which has struggled financially of late, closing out last year with a net loss of THB2.1 billion (about US$63 million) and a 14 percent drop in net profit for January-March 2018.
Other local airlines that deserve honorable mentions include Bangkok Airways, which earned honors as world’s best regional airline as well as Asia’s best regional airline.
