With a portrait of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej in his hands, an Australian tourist embarked on a 663-kilometer “walk for the king” yesterday from Koh Samui to Bangkok.
Michael Hammill, 46, said he had been vacationing on Koh Samui for three months when he heard about King Bhumibol’s passing. He said he could understand the nation’s big loss so he decided to travel on foot to sign the condolence book for the king at the Grand Palace.

Starting from the mainland in Surat Thani’s Donsak district, Hammill aims to walk 50 kilometers a day, so it will take about 14 days for the Aussie to arrive in Bangkok.
Hammill said that along his journey, Thai people have been showing him support and giving him necessities for his journey. However, Hammill said that he never accepted any free goods, but he was happy to take photos with Thai people when asked. He has also expressed condolences to the locals and told them to be strong, reported National News Bureau of Thailand.

Way to go Hammill!
