An Australian expat living in Thailand for 12 years was charged with theft yesterday after he was caught on CCTV rolling away a luggage cart belonging to three Thai women, which was left outside the ladies’ room at Suvarnabhumi Airport.
In an unusual case, 54-year-old John Robertson was tracked down and arrested by airport police after the three victims, whose names were not mentioned, alerted airport security that their bags were missing after coming out of the toilets.
In footage published by NAT News, Robertson was seen going into the men’s room, before coming out and taking the women’s luggage cart as if it were his own.
Robertson, who was on his way back to Australia, said he only wanted to open the bags to see what was inside and that he had no intention to steal.
The police did not believe his statement and charged him with theft.
Checking his documents, the police said Robertson frequently leaves and re-enters the country, and he has been living in Bangkok for 12 years and speaks a little bit of Thai.
Suvarnabhumi Police warned people not to leave their baggage unattended. Instead, they should ask airport security to watch their bags if necessary, Morning News reported.
