An Australian national with a layover at Suvarnabhumi International Airport yesterday was caught smuggling 26 iPhone 8 units with a street value of THB1 million (US$30,000).

Ho Won Harvard Lee, 38, was asked to open his suitcases after they were scanned in the “Nothing to Declare” aisle of customs and officers noticed the suspicious phones. He said he did not know he needed to declare the phones for tax assessment and that his plan was to resell the phones in Singapore, his final flight destination, reported Thai PBS.

Though some of the new iPhone models — the 8, 8 Plus, and X — launched abroad on Sept. 13, they have not yet been introduced in Thailand, reported Bangkok Post.

Lee was handed over to airport police for smuggling and will likely be charged with a Telecommunications Act violation.
