Government veterinarians in rural Songkhla province are trying to save the life of a female tiger, 20, with a two kilogram cancerous breast tumor that had already spread the disease to the internal organs.

Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) and Prince of Songkla University medical professionals operated on the tiger, named Or Noi, on Saturday, at Hat Yai’s Tone Nga Chang Wildlife Sanctuary, reported Bangkok Post.

The tiger was found in 2015 in Nakhon Pathom province and taken into custody by the DNP. It began living at the Songkhla sanctuary in 2016.

Two months ago, the large breast tumor was noticed by staff. After an exam last week, they decided they needed to operate as soon as possible.

They successfully removed the large tumor in a three-hour session but found that the cancer had already spread to the lungs and other organs.

The tiger is recovering from the procedure while vets decide on the next steps to take.
